I can’t in good conscience recommend this movie to you just because I liked the court room scenes. Every twist and turn those scenes took was exciting for my lizard brain to watch, even while the rest of my brain was screaming that this was a bad movie. The room they’re in is so echo-y it’s ridiculous, the judge is fed up from minute one, and with literally every question an attorney asks, the other is objecting. This movie is about 40% court room scenes and while none of them are super original, they all have a base-level of entertainment to them. I’m a sucker for a good court room drama and have been ever since I was little and saw Elle Woods get Chutney Windham to confess to murdering her father on the stand. And yet, I still had a good time watching this movie for the majority of its runtime, and there’s one very clear reason for that: court room scenes. Then, to top it all off, it feels so gross and misogynistic. On the one hand, it’s got so many ridiculous twists and is just really poorly written. The end of the movie is a total nightmare. That isn’t a moment in which we’re meant to sympathise with Rebecca that’s a moment where we’re meant to feel that our hero Frank has finally won as if he didn’t willingly climb into bed with her (metaphorically and literally). Maybe the most blatant example of this is the moment when Frank unambiguously rapes her by handcuffing her to a bed and forcing himself onto her. She’s just an evil woman who dares to have sex and enjoy it. All the characters who slut shame Rebecca are ultimately seen in the right and the movie stops caring about presenting her as a human being. Rebecca is constantly looked down upon for enjoying kinky sex, and while Frank as a lawyer fights against this, as a person he doesn’t seem all that bothered by it.

Body of Evidence is a more overt example of this, but the genre is full of it. The domineering women are almost always at least a little sympathetic, so the film should be presenting other characters slut shaming them as a bad thing, right? Wrong. Something that all erotic thrillers contain by their very nature is the suggestion of an anti-slut shaming sentiment.
All their scenes of foreplay are great, it’s when they start actually having sex that everything starts to feel a little off. Dafoe and Madonna aren’t doing anything spectacular in this, but their connection makes sense within the context of the film. What it’s over-compensating for I’m not sure because it’s not like it doesn’t have two charismatic leads with decent chemistry. I’m not saying that people don’t do that, it just feels like the movie is over-compensating for something. Body of Evidence has a scene where Madonna pours wax on Willem Dafoe’s junk and then fucks him. There’s a natural progression throughout the relationship as Kim Basinger’s character is being introduced to this world and everything they do feels realistic. I recently watched Nine ½ Weeks, which is just an okay movie but has killer sex scenes, many of which toy with kink in a really interesting way. The movie is very aware that it’s a studio film about sex and seems to want to prove itself by how ridiculous the sex scenes are. Wild might be a better word to describe it. Maybe it’s that this movie came out twenty-seven years ago and times have changed, or I’m just a freak, but I didn’t find it all that racy if I’m being honest. Also, a seven-time Razzie award nominee, one of which it won, and one of Roger Ebert’s most hated films of the year.Īs the description suggests, this movie is very sexually explicit, both in dialogue and action.
Rebecca is on trial for the murder of her much older lover and is thought to have literally fucked him to death. This is a notorious 1993 Uli Edel film starring Willem Dafoe as lawyer Frank Dulaney who is defending Rebecca Carlson, played by Madonna. I think my reasons for not liking it are different from critics’ reasons for not liking it, though. This is not a good movie, not at all (the Razzie’s are sometimes correct), but I also had a blast watching it even when it was abhorrent.
